E2 (Operational Commitments Establishment) posts offer Army Reservists the opportunity to serve beyond traditional Regimental Duty appointments. These roles exist across Army Headquarters, formations, specialist units and wider Defence, allowing Reservists to contribute their military and civilian expertise in a broad range of challenging appointments.
For junior officers, an E2 post can be an excellent way to broaden professional experience, develop new skills, expand networks and gain a deeper understanding of how the Army operates beyond the unit level. E2 appointments often provide exposure to strategic, operational and specialist areas of Defence that may not be encountered within a Regimental Duty role. This wider experience can strengthen your professional profile, enhance your understanding of the Army as an institution, and help prepare you for future leadership, command and staff appointments. Whether you are looking to develop as a leader, apply specialist civilian skills, build your network, or gain experience outside your cap badge, an E2 role can be a rewarding opportunity that complements your Army Reserve career.

1. 100 (Yeomanry) Regiment Royal Artillery - The 100 (Yeomanry) Regiment Royal Artillery (Formerly NRHQ RA), is based in Woolwich, the spiritual home of the Royal Artillery, with 221 (Wessex) Bty located in Larkhill, 255 (Somerset Yeomanry) Bty in Bath and an All Arms Staff Pool supporting Defence. Providing a range of capabilities from Tactical Air Control Parties and Naval Gunnery Liaison Officers to specialist Staff Officers and Gunnery Instructors. Their personnel spend most of their time supporting the Regular Army, Navy and Air Force on exercise and operations at home and abroad.

Maj Lewis Hartman, SO2 Too Good to Leave (TGTL), Personnel Directorate, Army HQ
Maj Lewis Hartman joined the Army Reserves in 2017, after leaving the regular army with 18 years of service. He joined the Too Good To Leave (TGTL) campaign in early 2025 and has been involved in several projects, mostly in the G4 area:
- Investigating and trying to improve the Army Reserves’ access to Combat Body Armour and associated load carrying equipment
- Administering and delivering the TGTL Project BUSTED FLUSH funding for Army Reserve units’ betterment projects
- Administering the TGTL ongoing webinar series
Lt Col Veronica Sefton, Commanding Officer, 100 Regiment Royal Artillery
Lt Col Sefton joined 100RA in 2017 on a Reg-Res transfer into an E2 appointment in the All-Arms Staff Pool and am now the CO. As such, she is well-placed to provide an overview of the circa 170 E2 positions in the All-Arms Staff Pool within 100RA.
WO2 Steve “Smudge” Smith, Group Recruiting Officer, Recruiting and Induction Wing
WO2 Steve “Smudge” Smith is the United Kingdom Special Forces (Reserves) UKSF(R) Group Recruiting Officer (GRO). Based in Recruiting & Induction Wing (RIW) in the Special Forces Training Command (SFTC). He supports UKSF Commanders direction to increase the Reserve component and leads recruiting for several units: 21 & 23 SAS(R) Regiments; R Sqn, SBS(R); and 63 (UKSF) Sig Sqn (R).
Maj Jordan Dickinson, Executive Officer, Army Training Regiment (Grantham)
Maj Jordan Dickinson is currently the Executive Officer of the Army Training Regiment (Grantham) which delivers over 50% of the Army Reserve’s Basic Training output and over 1500 recruits per year into the Land Forces. He is the senior Reservist in a fully hybrid unit.
